Ford of Europe

Introducing Ford's new automotive design direction

project background

Graphic Alliance, in co-operation with editorial agency IANS Ltd., has designed and produced a commemorative coffee table book for Ford of Europe entitled "kinetic design", showcasing Ford's new automotive design direction. Ford's kinetic design style can be seen on the recently launched Mondeo and S-MAX (Car of the Year 2007) models. As John Fleming, President and CEO Ford of Europe, says: "Kinetic Design will, in time, find its way throughout our model range".

IANS director, Ian Adcock, developed the concept of a book reflecting Ford's kinetic design values following lengthy discussions with the Ford of Europe design team. Adcock then approached Graphic Alliance to develop the visual theme.

The relationship between Graphic Alliance creative director, Charlie Hutton and Ford of Europe's automotive design team in Cologne has resulted in a book that charts the story of the manufacturer's new design ethos through a series of interviews with the Ford design team. These interviews, by respected automotive journalists, Ian Adcock and Matthew Carter are interspersed with designer sketches, ideas, building of concept cars (iosis and iosis x), and final production models (Mondeo and S-MAX).

"Ian Adcock's concept of producing a book that would really represent kinetic design through graphics and print materials, that visually communicates the thinking and designer details that go into the new Ford design ethos was a challenge" says Graphic Alliance partner and creative director Charlie Hutton.

The Kinetic Design book is housed in a two-part slip case printed in "Thunder" (Ford grey metallic) with aluminium look inner sleeve with recessed orange rubber inserts at both ends. The book itself is a 160-page hard back book, with casebound cover and aluminium foiled logos. The internal pages are comprised of different materials including uncoated and coated papers, acetate, French folded trace, and rubber pages.
