The wonders of WordPress

Just in case you didn’t know, WordPress is an open source project (which, put simply, means it’s free and has hundreds of people working on it from all corners of the globe) that can be used for anything – from your own personal blog to a fully functional, professional looking website.

Back in 2003, WordPress started as a blogging system, but has now evolved into a content management system (a.k.a. CMS) where almost anything can be made possible thanks to a wealth of different plugins, widgets and themes. In fact, just one look at some of our previous work will demonstrate to you how much WordPress can be manipulated and how versatile it can be.

Take, for instance, Because Magazine – the digital fashion magazine from the people behind Tank. It’s a high end, click to buy fashion magazine that simply oozes cool in a suitably unobtrusive manner. Since its launch back in September 2009, Because Magazine has been hailed in the press and most memorably described as “high-end fashion pornography… that makes me want to rob a bank while simultaneously winning the lottery” (NMA site of the week, 8th October 2009). We also got the chance to tell .net magazine all about the bespoke functions such as the wishlist, login and personal profiles which were made possible through extensively modified plugins to match the design and requirements of the website.

Or, for something a little different, why not take a look WOW Toys, who wanted a fully immersive brand experience built using an open source CMS. This site also received some brilliant coverage and featured on makebetterwebsites.com, bestcssgallery.com, welovewp.com and designshack.co.uk – to name but a few!

Nevertheless, flexible it may be, WordPress is not a full featured CMS (like the Graphic Alliance CMS). As a simple CMS it works brilliantly – search engines love it, it’s easy to use, and it looks great. However, if you’re after a database of information or a site which can hold all sorts of different content, then you will need to look further than WordPress which is, after all, just a blogging platform.

Even so, we can’t fault WordPress and love the power, flexibility and amazing community behind it!

Because… We love it!

Earlier this week we wrote a post on 5 of the best WordPress plugins. Just so you know, WordPress is a blog publishing application and content management system – and we love it! So, when our friends at Tank came to talk to us about their new digital fashion magazine built entirely in WordPress, we couldn’t wait to get stuck in.

If you’ve not seen Because yet, either online or in NMA’s site inspection feature, go check it out. It’s a digital magazine which offers the very best in fashion, accessories, beauty, jewellery and culture and has been quoted by NMA as being “high-end fashion pornography… Because magazine is a beautiful fashion and culture click-to-buy site”.

So, how was it created? Well, the entire site was implemented in WordPress and modified using a wide range of plugins. However, because they came to us with a set of specific needs, some extra modification was required. All user account creation and management functionality was skinned from the front end – which includes the login, registration, and profile pages. Logged in users can also save their favourite items to a personal wishlist so that they can go back to lust over their favourite items again and again!

5 of the best… Wordpress plugins

Here at GA, we love Wordpress (a blog publishing application and content mangement system), and have been working with the open-source platform for some time now. One of the latest projects that we’ve used it on is the highly customized Because Magazine, the digital fashion magazine brought to you by the team at Tank (we’ll tell you more about this project soon). As most people know, one of the best things about the Wordpress platform is the broad range of plugins available. There’s probably a plugin that can achieve any functionality you’re after! But, because we know that, sometimes, a lot of choice can be daunting, we have compiled a list of the top 5 must-have plugins for your wordpress blog. We have also included some handy tips on how to configure them!

1. Google XML SitemapsDownload
The easy way to automatically generate a sitemap for your blog, this plugin is ready to go, straight out of the box. You might need to create a blank sitemap.xml file on your site root and make it writable (chmod 777). We also recommend only including the Homepage, Posts pages and Static pages in the sitemap, as category/tag/author/archives pages are only duplicating your content.

2. All in One SEO PackDownload
This is also a must have, as it will enable you to do some basic SEO (Search Engine Optimization) for your blog. Tick all boxes in the plugin config page (with maybe the exception of “Capitalize Category Titles” and “Log Important Events”), and also add a description for the homepage and some keywords. It’s up to you if you want to use the plugin to rewrite all page titles, although if you don’t have in-depth programming knowledge this is the easiest way to go.

3. WP-PageNaviDownload
This plugin extends the built-in Wordpress navigation by adding a basic numbered paging navigation. The best way of customizing the look and feel of the plugin is to duplicate the pagenavi-css.css file in the plugin directory and copy it to your theme’s directory. The plugin will load the css file automatically and this will ensure that you don’t overwrite your styles when updating to a newer version.

4. SociableDownload
If you want to make it easy for people to write about your posts on social networks then this plugin is also a must have. Just download and install. The plugin allows you to choose from a very long list of sites, but we’d recommend not including more than 5 to10 sites. We currently add Twitter, Facebook, del.icio.us, StumbleUpon, Mixx, Digg, Reddit, Google and Print (the www.printfriendly.com free print optimization service).

5. ScissorsDownload
This one is a recent discovery, but it’s quickly found its way into our top 5! Scissors allows you to do some basic image editing from the Wordpress admin interface. We find it most useful for cropping thumbnails.

BONUS 2!  6. WP-DB-BACKUPDownload and 7. Akismet – Download
OK, we’re cheating a bit by adding two more, but the list wouldn’t have been complete otherwise :)

Akismet comes packaged with Wordpress and guards your blog against spam. You need to activate it by getting an API key and entering it at http://www.YOURSITE.com/wp-admin/plugins.php?page=akismet-key-config.

WP-DB-BACKUP doesn’t do anything visual to your blog, but it does perform the very useful task of automatically backing up your database. We recommend configuring the plugin to automatically email a weekly backup up, in order to be able to recover from a server crash or, hopefully not, a hack.
