Graphic Alliance goes green!

Global Action Plan_GAP

We all know that being green is a big issue these days. Carbon emissions, recycling, saving the environment, all to reduce damage to the environment and slow down global warming.

Well here at Graphic Alliance we are all doing our bit to save the planet, with a lot of help from a great charity ‘Global Action Plan‘ whose tag line is ‘creating the climate for change’. This is a charity which is funded by EU money and offers advice to small businesses in London. Global action plan has helped us focus on how we can reduce our carbon footprint by making us aware of little things we do on a daily basis which we can stop, such as leaving lights on when a room isn’t being used and machines being left on standby! So with these things brought to our attention we have started on the road to ‘green’ enlightenment and have received a certificate from our recycling company for all the paper, cardboard and printer cartridges we recycled in 2009 and we aim to do even better this year.

We have started by switching off monitors when not in use, turning off appliances instead of leaving them on, using natural light where possible and turning lights off when no one is in the room. Admittedly these do all seem like little things but it’s just the beginning of making Graphic Alliance a greener place to work.

A green spring clean!

Method receives our Frame of Honour

I hate cleaning. However a few months ago, whilst reluctantly browsing the household products aisle, I stumbled upon a brand of home cleaning products which has changed my attitude towards household chores. I’ll be honest, and tell you now that it was in fact their packaging that first caught my eye (I’m a sucker for a good bit of branding), and then their manifesto.

The brand in question is Method, who make non toxic, environmentally friendly cleaning products that not only look great but also smell amazing and do the job with very little elbow grease required. Just a few squirts of their French lavender all purpose spray makes my kitchen smell gorgeous and, because Method products are biodegradable, you can clean your home without flushing super-toxic chemicals down the drain into rivers, lakes and oceans. (I’ve also just bought their ylang ylang daily shower spray – a little spray and no scrubbing, leaves my shower sparkling!).

So, this month, Method gets put in the frame of honour for making my spring cleaning easy, environmentally friendly, looking good and smelling fab.

Go black to be green!

Did you know that a monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen?

O.k. so the savings aren’t huge (an all white web page uses about 74 watts to display and an all back page only 59) but apply this to Google, which gets at least 200 million queries per day, and the numbers start to become slightly more significant (see the blog post “Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt Hours a Year”).

So, what can you do to help? Well, why not try using uk.blackle.com, a search engine powered by Google. By setting it as your homepage, every time you load your internet browser a little bit of energy will be saved!
